During the training sessions, the participants studied the experience of the Copernicus Science Centre in the field of science communication and learned how the Science Museum engages visitors of different age groups. The JAS team also learned interactive methods of science communication that help to engage younger visitors and encourage adults to actively participate in scientific events.
"These trainings are an important stage in the development of the network of science museums and science centres in Ukraine. Our employees will spread the acquired knowledge and skills in the regions of Ukraine, engaging as many children and young people as possible in science. One of the key goals of the network of science centres and museums in Ukraine is to help overcome educational losses caused first by the coronavirus, and then by a full-scale war. We are grateful to our partners: Ecsite, the Simons Foundation and Copernicus Science Centre, in particular to Bruno Maquart, Catherine Franche, Ivvet Modinou, Robert Firmhofer and all foreign colleagues who support our children in Ukraine and abroad by creating opportunities for the implementation of joint educational initiatives," said the President of the Junior Academy of Sciences, Stanislav Dovhyi.
The team of the Junior Academy of Sciences shared with their Polish colleagues their methodological developments and experience of working with children. "Our Ukrainian colleagues work not only in the museum, but also in bomb shelters. They accompany children while visiting the exposition and hold educational workshops for them. I admire their work. I am sure that this will result in even closer cooperation in the future," said Robert Firmhofer, Director of the Copernicus Science Centre.
The team of the Junior Academy of Sciences plans to use the acquired knowledge to improve the projects of its Science Museum and implement new educational initiatives. "Based on the acquired knowledge, we have already planned trainings for the teams of the Science Museums in Kyiv and other regions, and have created a repository of ideas for new educational programs aimed at engaging both families with children and adults separately," commented Olha Makarenko, Team Manager of the JAS Science Museum in Kyiv.
In 2024, Ecsite, supported by the Simons Foundation, has been leading a series of projects to support science engagement in Ukraine in collaboration with Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. This collaboration includes the donation of several exhibitions (and exhibits) to Ukrainian science centres by Ecsite members, the training of 15 experts from Ukraine at the 2024 Ecsite Conference and a one-week training for 5 employees of the JAS at Copernicus Science Centre (Warsaw, Poland).
